Recently engaged? Here’s a to do list of what to do next

Congratulations, you are engaged! Once the shock of the proposal has worn off and you have shown all your friends and family the sparkly ring on your finger it’s now time for the fun bit, planning your wedding day.

Before you get heavily involved in picking out your wedding dress, what you will choose for your wedding breakfast, cars and flowers etc. follow our top tips on what to do next.

Set the date

You may not be able to set the date yet until you know that the wedding venue you have chosen is available on that particular date. When choosing your date you may want to think about whether you would like a winter or summer wedding and make sure that this date doesn’t clash with other major events such as another family wedding, a big birthday party or even something like the final of the World Cup! Yes you may be surprised but this can affect the numbers of your wedding party. For more information on why more and more people are choosing to get married in winter, have a read of our Winter Wedding Blog.

Choose a budget

This is something that you will need to think carefully about. If your family has already offered to help out then that’s great but you still want to work out how much you can afford without going into too much debt. If you do choose a summer wedding for instance, be prepared to pay a little bit more than if you had a winter wedding. Have a think about things that may not be as important to you, you could opt for cupcakes instead of a wedding cake or having artificial flowers instead of real ones.

Speaking of flowers, have a read of our wedding flowers blog.

carlton manor gardensBook the venue

Deciding on the perfect place to hold your wedding will be one of the most important decisions you will have to make. It’s worth thinking about if you want the venue to be quite close to home or somewhere a bit further this will also come down to costs as you will probably have to pay more for the cars if the venue is further from home.
Some couples choose to have their wedding at a hotel like Carlton Manor where they can have both ceremony and reception held there and this is also an advantage as most hotels will have a wedding planner to help plan your day and the food may be included in the cost.

Attend Wedding Fayres

Wedding Fayre’s are fantastic events to attend to get different ideas for your wedding. Most of them are free and the suppliers sometimes have special offers on if you book their product/service on the day. It’s also good because most of the food companies there will be giving away free samples!

Choose your colour/theme

The colour and theme of your wedding will also need to be chosen carefully. The colour will need to reflect the time of year; winter or summer. You will also need to check with your florist that the colours you have chosen for your flowers will be in season. The colours will also be used for your table decorations, balloons, bridesmaid dresses and usually the ties for the groom and best man/men.

Follow blogs, Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, Pinterest based around weddings for ideas

It seems that the most popular accounts on social media are wedding suppliers/companies so our advice would be to make the most of it! You can get lots of different ideas from Pinterest such as colour schemes, wedding favours, bridesmaid dresses style, table decorations and much more. Wedding blogs are a good place to pick up tips about preparing for your big day and Facebook groups can be a good place to find out information on wedding fayres and people selling items from their wedding that they no longer need, such as table decorations.

Send out ‘save the date’ cards

Once the date of the wedding has been decided, send out ‘save the date’ cards to your guests in plenty of time so that they don’t agree to another invite for another event.

We hope these tips come in handy to get you all set up in planning your wedding day and good luck!

Please do not hesitate to contact us on 01502 560567 if you would like a tour of Carlton Manor as a potential wedding venue. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Our top picks for fabulous wedding favours

Can anyone remember the all-time traditional wedding favour, sugared almonds? The day of the sugared almond has been and gone and bride and grooms are becoming more adventurous when it comes to choosing their wedding favours to try and make a lasting impression on their guests.

Wedding favours can become a talking point at a wedding if you get it right.

We have researched some of the most original and unusual wedding favours as well as some old favourites that have been used at weddings. We will start our list with a more traditional approach and the most common and popular wedding favours.

Traditional/popular wedding favours

Sugared Almonds
Lottery Tickets
Fortune Cookies
Homemade chocolates
Favour boxes containing confectionary

As well as being the most popular these wedding favours are great if you are on a budget as they are very cost effective.

Edible wedding favours

wedding-favoursPopcorn Favours – there are a few options of how you can present your popcorn wedding favour. The first option is to buy the popcorn ready-made, there are a few flavours that you can choose from and present the popcorn in a mini box.  The second option is you can buy popcorn kernels and present them in a decorative jar so that your guests can take home and make their own popcorn.

Personalised Mints – Most couples choose to have the tin personalised with a little message on the front and the date of the wedding. Mints always come in handy.

wedding-cupcakesHot Chocolate Dipping Spoons – the dipping spoons can be personalised with a variety of toppings from marshmallows, nuts and sprinkles. These favours may cause a problem if the weather is hot as they will melt quickly, but they look and taste delicious!

Cupcakes – cupcakes have become very popular and can be used for any occasion from baby showers, birthdays, anniversaries, valentines and weddings. There are some really talented cake designers out there that will be able to produce some amazing cupcakes. We especially like the cupcakes that are presented in teacups, they are very effective and perfect for a vintage wedding. We found these ones on weddingandweddingflowers.co.uk but these can be done by any professional cake maker.

Unusual wedding favours

Hangover Kit – We think this wedding favour will be greatly received by your guests; you could include headache tablets, an eye mask and a sachet of coffee and then tie this around a bottle of water. Your guests will be fully prepared for the morning after.

Flower Seeds – ‘Celebrate our special day and watch our love grow’ a personalised bag to give to your guests containing flower seeds that they can plant in their garden or in a flower pot so that they will always be reminded of your special day.

wedding favour candlesPersonalised Christmas Bauble – A wedding favour that is more suitable for a winter wedding but can be very effective and a great keepsake for your guests.

Handmade Candles  - we came across the lovely little candles from rocheshop.com and fell in love with them. What a fantastic wedding favour idea.

We hope you have enjoyed reading through our list of wedding favour ideas. What has been the most unusual wedding favour that you have received?
